Hoboken Offers Local Businesses $100 in Free Garage Parking for Customers During Holiday Season; Urges Residents to Shop Local

Hoboken, NJ - Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

The City of Hoboken is urging residents to support local small businesses this holiday season. The 2nd Annual Small Business Saturday, organized by American Express, will be on Saturday, November 26th, the day after Black Friday. American Express is offering a one-time $25 credit for cardholders who register an eligible card and make a purchase of at least $25 at a small business on November 26th.

“I urge our community to support our small, independent businesses this holiday season and year-round,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “They are the backbone of our local economy and part of what makes Hoboken so vibrant and unique. To help attract customers to our local businesses this holiday season, the City is offering each business $100 worth of free customer parking for our municipal garages.”

Starting on November 21st, Hoboken businesses can visit the Hoboken Parking Utility to pick up $100 worth of “Park-and-Shop” customer coupons valid from November 26th through December 31st, 2011. Businesses that currently do not have a business parking permit should bring the same documentation required for a permit.

“Park-and-Shop” validation coupons are always available for purchase by registered Hoboken businesses at the Hoboken Parking Utility during regular business hours. Businesses with customers who park in municipal garages can purchase the $2, $4, $8, and $12 coupons at one-half face value and pass out the coupons to their customers. When customers return to the garage, they simply insert the coupon after their ticket to reduce the parking fee by the amount displayed on the coupon. The system works like validation machines, except businesses don’t need to worry about billing invoices being sent by the Parking Utility.

To facilitate parking for customers of local businesses, the Parking Utility also encourages business owners and employees to park in garages rather than occupying parking meters. Business permit holders can purchase “Merchant Coupons” to park in municipal garages for $5 per 12 hour period (a booklet of 10 is $50). That is a savings of $3 per day compared to feeding the meter for 8 hours (which is also illegal), and it preserves valuable on-street parking for customers. By participating in this program, business owners and employees can save over $375 per year as opposed to parking at metered spaces. Last year the Parking Utility instituted a new free version of the business parking permit that only permits the discounted parking in municipal garages as an alternative to the $200 permit that also allows on-street parking. More than 100 business owners and employees have already signed up for the free parking permit option, freeing up parking for customers in Hoboken’s commercial districts.
