With temperatures expected to reach into the 90’s today and tomorrow, the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) urges residents to take steps to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
“Heat stroke and heat exhaustion are serious conditions that can require hospital care,” said Health and Senior Services Commissioner Mary O’Dowd. “In extremely hot weather, it is vital to drink plenty of fluids, spend time in cool places and minimize any physical activity. And please remember to pay special attention to small children and elderly family members and neighbors to make sure they are safe.”
You will soon see a difference at intersections in Hoboken! Volunteers will paint curbs at intersections in the city next Saturday. The task is part of Hoboken Grace Community Church’s 1Day Hoboken – Making Hoboken Better! Hoboken Grace invites all of Hoboken to join together to serve our community.
Saturday, June 9, at 10am, volunteers will come together at Church Square Park, then spread out throughout Hoboken to spend two hours working on projects for various organizations serving our city.
Volunteers will work in small groups, cleaning public spaces, organizing the food pantry, clearing driftwood, planting flowers, repainting faded curb markings, and more. Hundreds of volunteers are needed and can sign up at www.1DayHoboken.com or visit Church Square Park that Saturday morning at 10am.
UPDATE (5/24/12): The remainder of the paving of River Street between 2nd Street and 4th Street is scheduled for Friday, May 25, weather permitting. Free garage parking to residents affected by the work is available from 8pm on May 24 to noon on May 26.

UPDATE (5/21/12): Due to rain, the paving of River Street from Hudson Place to 4th Street planned for today has been postponed until Tuesday, May 22 or Wednesday, May 23, weather permitting.
As a result of scheduling conflicts from moving the resurfacing work on River Street from nighttime to daytime hours, the paving portion of the work on River Street between Hudson Place and 4th Street has been postponed until Monday, May 21. Milling work will be completed today, and asphalt will be temporarily placed around manhole covers. On Monday, May 21, residents and visitors are advised to expect traffic delays in the area and to consider alternate routes.
The public is invited to community meetings regarding the redesign of Observer Highway and a section of Newark Street. The meetings will take place on Wednesday, May 30th in the basement conference room of City Hall, 94 Washington Street. The meeting for Observer Highway will take place from 6p-7pm followed by a meeting for Newark Street from 7pm-8pm. Both meetings will be “open house” format and residents can visit at any time.

The City of Hoboken invites residents to a community meeting on Thursday, May 17, 2012 to solicit input on the community’s desire for improvements to Church Square Park. The meeting will take place on the 2nd floor of the Hoboken Public Library, located at 500 Park Avenue next to Church Square Park, from 5pm to 8pm.
“Church Square Park is used by so many people for many different purposes, so we want to hear everyone’s ideas on how we can improve the park for our entire community,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer.

Due to the unpredictable access to driveways and off-street parking as a result of the resurfacing work on River Street between Hudson Place and 4th Street, the City will be providing free garage parking to residents affected by the work. Free parking will be available in municipal Garage B (entrance on 2nd Street between River Street and Hudson Street) and Garage D (entrance on Hudson Street between 2nd Street and 3rd Street) from 8pm on Wednesday, May 16 to noon on Friday, May 18. Residents who need to exit a garage via River Street are advised to exit by 8am on Thursday, May 17, park in a municipal garage, or on-street. Free garage parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
In response to the community’s concerns about nighttime milling and paving, the remainder of the resurfacing work on River Street between Hudson Place and 4th Street previously scheduled to take place during overnight hours this week has been rescheduled to occur during daytime hours. Residents and visitors are advised to expect traffic delays in the area and to consider alternate routes. Milling work is scheduled to resume at 9am on Wednesday, May 16, with paving work tentatively scheduled for Thursday, May 17. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Hoboken’s Annual Memorial Day Parade will take place on Wednesday, May 23rd, 2012. The parade will assemble at 6:00pm and step off at 6:30pm from City Hall (1st and Washington St) and ends at the Hoboken Elks Club (10th and Washington St) for a ten block march. Hoboken’s Memorial Day Parade is the oldest in New Jersey. This year marks the 114th year of marching to honor the brave men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice for their Country.
