Parking for Residents

Parking information for Residents, their guests and employees/workers

Although Hoboken is the ideal city to live car-free, many Hoboken residents still need a car…

Whether the train or bus takes more time, your job demands a lot of driving, or you’re a busy parent with a busy schedule, we understand that many of us in Hoboken need to drive a car every day, or choose to own a car for good reason. For those of us with a car, encouraging neighbors who don’t need to own a car to live car-free equates to fewer cars congesting our streets and a less stressful parking situation. That’s why we’re working so hard every day to make it easy – and in most cases cheaper – to live car-free if you don’t need to commute by car to work every day.  For example, did you know that the Hoboken Corner Cars program gives you access to over 40 vehicles parked in reserved on-street spaces nearby your home whenever you need one, all at inexpensive hourly or daily rates? Living car-free means giving up the high costs of car-ownership, estimated by AAA last year at over $8,500/year, and saying “goodbye” to the stress of looking for parking in Hoboken. If it turns out owning a car is still your best bet, please see below for on-street and garage/lot parking options available to Hoboken residents.

Detailed description of On-Street parking options for residents

HPU provides the following information as a convenience to you in lieu of having to read the official City Code Chapter 141A “Parking Permits”. For the most part, everything you need to know about getting and using a permit is here for you. Please note that in any case where this information contradicts or lacks specificity that is otherwise provided in the City Code, the City Code is correct and this document is not. We hope this is helpful!

  • Resident Parking Permit (Permit Symbol: R):  Residents who display this permit may park in “Permit Parking Only” (white sign) and “Resident Permit Parking Only” (green sign) zones without limitation except during posted street cleaning periods or temporary/emergency restrictions.  This permit is for most Hoboken residents who have their current Hoboken address on their driver’s license and own, lease, or drive a company car properly documented as parked in Hoboken.  Resident parking permits are issued on an annual basis as either a placard or decal  and expire at 11:59PM on the last day of their validity.  Fees are $15/year for the first vehicle in a household, $30 /year for the second vehicle in a household, and $90 /year for the third and each additional vehicle in a household. • Temporary Parking Permit (Permit Symbol: T):  Residents who display this permit may park in “Permit Parking Only” (white sign) zones without limitation except during posted street cleaning periods or temporary/emergency restrictions.  This permit does not allow parking in “Resident Permit Parking Only” (green sign) zones.  This permit is for Hoboken residents who do not have their current Hoboken address on their driver’s license or who drive a car that is either not owned or registered to the resident with proper documented as parked in Hoboken.   Examples include individuals without a Hoboken address on their New Jersey driver’s license, vehicles not registered in the name of the resident, residents awaiting receipt of a driver’s license with a Hoboken address, residents awaiting registration papers for a newly purchased vehicle, or for vehicles in short term use, such as when a permitted vehicle is in for repairs or when using rental cars.  One other common case is for new employees of a Hoboken business who have not received their first pay stub.  Temporary parking permits are issued at a daily rate as a placard for a maximum of 45 days and expire at 11:59PM on the last day of their validity.  The standard fee for this permit is $1/day.   Residents who either do not have a current Resident parking permit issued in their name or concurrently suspend use of a Resident parking permit are issued a Temporary parking permit for use with a rental car/Corner Car, when awaiting permanent plates for a newly purchased vehicle, or when a permitted vehicle is in for repairs free of charge up to a maximum of 45 days and include an endorsement to allow parking in “Resident Permit Parking Only” (green sign) zones.  Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS, RC, or RT] AND [VS, VC, VL, or VN].  Still have questions? Click here for FAQ’s.
  • Driveway Parking Permit (Permit Symbol: D): Residents and their visitors who display this permit may park on-street immediately in front of a resident’s driveway without limitation except during posted street cleaning periods or temporary/emergency restrictions.  Vehicles displaying this permit must comply with all posted/marked parking regulations if any portion of the vehicle extends beyond the physical width of the driveway (where the curb returns to the standard street width).  Driveway parking permits are issued to Hoboken residents on an annual basis as a placard and expire at 11:59PM on the last day of their validity.  For initial permit issuance, HPU staff will survey the driveway to confirm the permitted vehicle is no longer than the driveway width (to avoid future disputes, HPU does not issue Driveway parking permits for vehicles that are longer than the physical width of the driveway).  There is no fee for this permit, but residents interested in this permit should familiarize themselves with the strict rules established by the State of New Jersey and reflected in Hoboken’s City Code §190-41.1. The standard fee for Hoboken residents is $5/day.  Senior/disabled Visitor parking permits are available to any Hoboken resident over the age of 62, or declared officially disabled by the State of New Jersey to the extent that he/she cannot drive.  A maximum of two (2) senior/disabled Visitor parking permits per resident may be issued.  Individuals requesting disabled Visitor parking permits may not have a Resident parking permit in their name.  Visitor parking permits expire at 11:59PM on the last day of their validity.   Click here for FAQ’s.  Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS, RC, or RT] AND [VS, VC, VL, or VN].
  • Business Parking Permit (Permit Symbol: B): Employees (nannies, health care staff, etc.) or workers (cleaning staff, contractors, etc.) employed in the home of Hoboken residents who display this permit may park in “Permit Parking Only” (white sign) zones during their regularly scheduled working hours without limitation except during posted street cleaning periods or temporary/emergency restrictions.  This permit does not allow parking in “Resident Permit Parking Only” (green sign) zones.  Business parking permits are issued to Hoboken residents for their employees/contractors at a monthly, quarterly, or annual rate as a placard for a maximum of the employment contract term.  The standard fees are $50/month, $100/quarter, or $200/year.  Business parking permits expire at 11:59PM on the last day of their validity.   Click here for FAQ’s.  Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [NB, ND, or NE] AND [VN].
  • Pay Station Smart Cards (coming soon):  Hoboken recently replaced 960+ traditional single-space coin-only parking meters on commercial streets with nearly 150 state-of-the-art multi-space parking meters (“pay stations”) to make parking in the metered parking zone more convenient and less confusing.  This option is for individuals who regularly park in metered areas of the city and don’t want the hassle of paying with coins or waiting for credit card processing.  Smart cards allow for any amount of money to be loaded onto the card and are instantly charged at the meter; they are the fastest way to pay for parking at pay stations.  Smart cards are available to the general public and may be purchased online or at HPU during regular business hours and are ready for use immediately upon activation.
  • Temporary No Parking (TNP) Signs:  These signs are available to the general public for reserving specific on-street spaces for commercial vehicles or containers involved in moving, large deliveries, contractor activities, or approved special events.  TNP signs are sold Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 4pm as well as Saturdays and certain holidays between 9am and 1pm, in increments of  4, 8, 12, and 24-hours for $10.00, $15.00, $30.00, and $40.00, respectively.  Requests for TNP signs in excess of 24 hours must be made in person at HPU.  TNP signs must be ordered a minimum of 72 hours in advance of the time you wish to reserve on-street space(s).  Temporary no parking sign purchases for Saturdays and holidays must be made at least one (1) week in advance of the desired posting time. TNP signs are for commercial vehicles and therefore may not be purchased for personal vehicles.  Each TNP sign reserves approximatelyeighteen (18) feet of on-street curb length (NOTE: Due to numerous street appurtenances and regulations, this estimate is neither exact nor guaranteed; you are strongly advised to be conservative with your needs estimate).  For all vehicles equal to or greater in sizes than small moving vans/trucks, a minimum of two (2) signs is required.  When ordering TNP signs, the exact number of signs and the exact street addresses (start and end points) must be provided to our Customer Service Representatives; if you are unsure of this information, please call or speak to HPU staff before placing any orders.  TNP reservations do not exempt vehicles from street cleaning or emergency regulations.  It is the purchaser’s responsibility to ensure that signs remain posted throughout the 48-hour advance warning period and to notify HPU if signs have been removed by weather and/or vandalism.  HPU does not guarantee cars will not be parked at the time signs go into effect, but we will make every attempt to enforce with towing when/if this happens.  When contact information is available in our records, HPU typically attempts to make “courtesy calls” to owner’s of vehicles parked in front of live TNP signs before towing. Click here for FAQ’s.

Detailed description of garage/lot parking options for residents

  • Resident Monthly Standard: This option is for residents who want the flexibility to park their car in the garage at all times, or who do not use their car frequently and therefore want to park their car for extended periods of time without the hassles of on-street parking. Residents may park their car in unreserved spaces of the garage 24/7 on a first come-first serve basis. Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS or RC] AND [VS, VC, or VL].
  • Resident Monthly Limited: This option is ideal for residents who drive their cars to work every day. Residents may park their car in unreserved spaces of the garage at all hours except from 10am to 4pm Monday through Friday. Residents are granted two days per month in which they can be in the garage during the 10:00 am to 4:00 pm period. If these are not used during a month, they can “roll over” and be collected throughout the year for various purposes, such as leaving the car in the garage while on a vacation. The maximum number of “rollover” days that may be collected is 24 (2 days/month X 12 months); once 24 rollover days are collected, no additional days can accrue on the account. If the monthly agreement is terminated by either the customer or the city, rollover days are not reimbursable and cannot be recouped. Residents who have exhausted their rollover days and remain in the garage between the hours of 10am and 4pm M-F will be charged $20/day upon exiting the garage. Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS, RC, or RT] AND [VS, VC, VL, or VN].
  • Resident Monthly Reserved: This option is for residents who want a reserved parking space in a municipal garage that may not be occupied by anyone else. Residents may park their car in their reserved space of the garage 24/7. Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS or RC] AND [VS, VC, or VL].
  • Resident Monthly Senior: Senior residents over the age of 62 may park their car in unreserved spaces of the garage 24/7 on a first come-first serve basis at a discounted senior rate. Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS or RC] AND [VS, VC, or VL] (Note: Driver’s license must indicate age of 62).
  • Resident Overnight: This option is for residents who usually park on-street but occasionally need to park their car overnight in a municipal garage. Limited parking is available from 8pm to 8am at a discounted rate of $5/night in Garages “B”, “D”, or Midtown. If your car is parked after 8pm but remains in the garage beyond 8am the following morning, standard hourly rates apply. If you already have a Resident or Temporary parking permit, there is no need to purchase this type of parking in advance; simply present your Resident or Temporary parking permit to the attendant with your ticket when existing at the gate. Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS or RC] AND [VS, VC, or VL]  (Note: Must present Resident or Temporary permit at garage).
  • Vacation Spot: This option is for residents who are planning time away from Hoboken and usually park on-street. To avoid street cleaning tickets or the hassle of asking friends/family members to move their cars, limited discounted parking is available to residents in Garage B on Hudson Street (6th Floor) for up to 14 days per year. The fee is $5/day, with a maximum of 14 days per calendar year. Simply come in to the Hoboken Parking Utility office and provide the same documentation as required for a Resident parking permit. You will receive a “Visitor parking permit” that indicates validity in “Garage B, 6th Floor” only and the dates the permit is valid. Show this permit to the attendant when departing and he will charge you the discounted rate. Documentation requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS, RC, or RT] AND [VS, VC, VL, or VN]

If your car is parked beyond the discounted period specified in the announcement, standard hourly rates apply. If you already have a Resident or Temporary parking permit, there is no need to purchase this type of parking in advance; simply present your Resident or Temporary parking permit to the attendant with your ticket when existing at the gate and refer to the emergency announcement (or show a copy of the announcement). Documentation Requirements (see requirement code explanations): [RS or RC] AND [VS, VC, or VL]  (Note: Must present Resident or Temporary permit at garage).
