Hoboken has been named a finalist by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association in the 2014 People’s Choice Awards for outstanding downtowns in New Jersey. The public is invited to vote online for the favorite downtown in each of the Northern, Central and Southern Areas of New Jersey. Hoboken will compete with these Northern Area downtowns: Historic Downtown Jersey City, Montclair Center, and Downtown Morristown.

“Hoboken has become the fastest-growing city in New Jersey because people want to live in vibrant, walkable, transit-rich communities,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “We’re honored to be a finalist in this competition to recognize the great downtowns in New Jersey.”

Hoboken’s Washington Street was named a Great Street in 2010 by the American Planning Association, and Hoboken’s South Waterfront was named a Great Place in New Jersey in 2013 by the New Jersey Chapter of the American Planning Association. More >

City of Hoboken Receives Approval for Loan to Build Flood Pump

Tuesday, Aug 12, 2014

The City of Hoboken’s application for a low interest loan from the New Jersey Environmental Infrastructure Trust, in partnership with North Hudson Sewerage Authority, has been approved by the State of New Jersey. The $11.7 million loan will pay for the construction of Hoboken’s second wet weather pump station (WWPS) to be built underground near 11th Street and Hudson Street. The wet weather pump station will be designed, constructed, operated and maintained by the North Hudson Sewerage Authority (NHSA) on a long-term lease from the City.

“We are very pleased that our application for this critical flood pump was approved by the State,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “The latest National Climate Assessment confirms what we have all been experiencing first-hand — heavy rain events in the Northeast have increased more than 70% in the last 50 years, and when those downpours occur near high tide, we flood. This pump will help alleviate flooding in Northwest Hoboken, particularly in the area around ShopRite, as part of an integrated four-part ‘Resist, Delay, Store, Discharge’ water management strategy.” More >

Upper Willow Avenue Resurfacing Features Traffic & Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Monday, Aug 4, 2014

Hudson County recently completed the repaving of Willow Avenue from 11th Street to 13th Street. These two blocks, which had 64 vehicle collisions from 2008 to 2013, include an elementary school, a large senior housing population, and a pocket park. As a result, the City of Hoboken advocated that additional traffic and pedestrian safety measures be incorporated into the resurfacing of the street, and the City thanks Hudson County for working to make the street safer. The safety improvements included as part of this project include:

  • Painted textured curb extensions at corners protected by vertical delineators (flexible bollards). They provide increased space for pedestrians waiting to cross intersections, reduce crossing distances, increase pedestrian visibility, reduce vehicle speeds by narrowing the roadway, and reduce illegal parking in crosswalks.
  • High visibility, straightened out crosswalks to further shorten crossing distances and to be more visible to drivers at night. Reduced crossing distances also provide extra time for green lights.
  • “Sharrows” (shared arrows) to guide cyclists and indicate to drivers that the roadway is to be shared with bikes.
  • A striped buffer to keep bicyclists out of the car “dooring” zone.
  • Reverse (or back-in) angle parking.
