As
weather forecasters predict possible flooding in the days
ahead, Public
Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) offers winter
safety and security
tips for customers:
Make
sure it's PSE&G before you let someone in your home:
PSE&G employees have photo identification badges that
clearly verify they
are who they say. If you are not sure of someone's identity
or have
difficulty with the badges, call PSE&G's toll free,
24-hour customer service
center at 1-800-436-7734 (PSEG) to verify that an employee
has been
dispatched to your premise.
If
your basement is flooded:
If water reaches the height of the gas burner on a water
heater or gas
heaters, customers can shut off the supply of gas to the
unit if YOU know
how. You must call PSE&G to have the gas supply turned
back on. If
customers lose electricity and their basement is flooded,
call PSE&G.
Customers should not go into a flooded basement if energized
wires are
present. Basements must be pumped and clear of water before
PSE&G can
perform any repair or restoration work.
If
you smell gas:
Water in the basement can put out the pilot light in a furnace
or hot water heater. If you smell gas:
1. Put out all open flames. Don't light matches or lighters
and don't attempt to light the appliance.
2. Don't touch electric switches, thermostats or appliance
controls. They may cause sparks.
3. Open windows and outside doors for ventilation.
4. If the odor is strong, don't' stop to use your telephone
or cell phone. Leave the premises immediately and go to
a neighbor's home or remain outside (if possible) until
PSE&G comes.
Customers
who smell gas should call PSE&G's toll free, 24-hour
customer
service center at 1-800-436-7734 (PSEG).
Keep
service areas in homes and yards safe, well lit and free
of clutter:
Customers are asked to take the following into consideration:
• Keep the area around your appliances clear of clutter.
• Notify PSE&G of any hazardous conditions, such
as loose steps or railings.
• Please keep dogs and other animals secured and away
from employees and service areas.
Keep
your meter free of snow and ice:
If you are a natural gas customer whose gas meter is on
the outside of your
home or business, please take the following precautions
to keep your gas
supply flowing:
• Do clear snowdrifts away from the meter and piping.
• Do not pile snow on top of the gas meter or around
its
connecting piping when you are shoveling your premises.
• Do brush snow from the meter and piping before a
thick layer of ice builds up.
When you drive
past our worksites:
Please slow down and be alert when driving past a PSE&G
roadwork jobsite,
especially in rainy, icy weather. Driving too fast can endanger
employees
and hamper the ability to perform important work. PSE&G
crews use work area
protection - traffic cones, utility work signs and flaggers
- to protect them and to allow them to do their jobs safely. |
