- Field will be ready for upcoming season -
HOBOKEN, NJ, March 31, 2005 -
Mayor David Roberts and City officials broke ground on the first phase of a project to resurface the Mile Square City’s Little League Field, a move that is part of the municipality’s ongoing effort to upgrade and expand recreational opportunities for residents.
“For nearly four years, this administration has focused on recreation and the creation of open space for the benefit of all residents. This is another example of upgrading and enhancing an existing facility which is used by many children in our community,” said Mayor David Roberts.
The field will be re-surfaced with the same artificial material used on the City’s soccer field and on the athletic field at Hoboken High School. The $600,000 project is being funded largely through Green Acres grants from the State.
The re-surfacing will take two months to complete and will be ready for the start of the Little League season in early May. The new surface is being installed by T & M Contracting, the company that installed the High School’s original artificial surface.
“This new surface will greatly enhance the field by reducing annual maintenance and providing a consistent playing surface. This is a fact we have already experienced at the soccer field,” said Environmental Services Director Joseph Peluso.
The new field will also cut down the number of rain-outs during the season, as it dries much quicker than a grass surface, noted Little League President James Farina.
Hoboken hosts 12 little league teams which serve 156 children.
