STATE
GRANT TO FUND STREETSCAPE PROJECT
– $400,000 Earmarked for Fourth Ward –
–HOBOKEN, NJ, April 23, 2003– The City has been
awarded a $400,000 state grant to begin a multi-phase streetscape
project which will provide an important catalyst in the continued
revitalization of the Fourth Ward, Mayor David Roberts announced today.
"I want to ensure that the whole community benefits, and this
project will be a great investment for the residents of the Fourth
Ward," said the Mayor who hosted a City Hall press conference
which was attended by State Senate Majority Leader Bernard Kenny,
Fourth Ward Councilman Christopher Campos and other city officials.
The three phase project calls for the addition of new brick sidewalks,
Victorian-style lampposts and shade trees. The first phase will link
the portion of First Street at Adams Street, which was made over more
than 15 years ago, and continue west to Jackson Street and north to
Fourth Streets. Phase 2 will connect Monroe and Madison streets between
First and Fourth streets and finally, Jefferson and Adams streets
will be connected between First and Fourth streets.
The streetscape project was one of 45 chosen from among 244 applications
submitted for the state's Livable Communities Pilot Program which
is administered by the New Jersey Department of Transportation "It's
always gratifying when we can obtain state aid for the betterment
of our community," said Senator Kenny.
"This will significantly enhance the neighborhood and will raise
the quality of life for both residents and business owners in the
Fourth Ward," said Councilman Campos.
The streetscape design contract was recently awarded to Marchetto
Caulfield Associates and Arnold Associates who produced renderings
of the project.
Construction will commence later this year. |
